Bhoomi Producers' Collective

Initiated by VIKALP in 2020, Bhoomi unites over 5,000 indigenous agroforest producer families across 150 villages in South Gujarat

Bhoomi
Seed Varieties
15+ rice, 10+ millets
Trees Planted
4,22,924+ since 2016
Women Farmers
5,000+ empowered
Villages
150+ communities

BHOOMI stands for land, PRODUCERS are agroforest producers — farmers and farm workers — and COLLECTIVE is a collaboration for social and economic empowerment with nature conservation.

Our program sprouts from a social reforestation effort that began in 2016. Over 4,22,924 fruit, forestry, and native trees planted with 5,000+ families offer opportunities for livelihood and extra income, while preserving nature and combating global warming.

More than 500 families have already returned to traditional regenerative agriculture with the support of our Seed Bank and training programs.

Vision

A world with climate-friendly inclusive development leading to a healthy society with access to a dignified life, sustainable food security & livelihood through constitutional rights.

Mission

To empower the community for climate-friendly inclusive development towards sustainable food security and livelihood through regenerative agriculture and social forestry, with special focus on women on a collective basis.

The Miracle Grain: Millets for the Future

Once considered a poor people's food, millets have emerged as a symbol of nutrition and sustainability. Bhoomi champions millet farming as the answer to food security, climate change, and livelihood challenges.

Climate Smart

Grows in arid climates up to 60°C, needs minimal water, no chemicals

Nutritious

Rich in protein, minerals, vitamins, dietary fibre. Gluten-free

Anti-Hunger

Combats malnutrition, boosts farmer incomes, planetary health

Sustainable

Provides food, fodder, health, and ecological security

Our Objectives

1

Encourage traditional and regenerative agriculture including millets

2

Increase the production capacity of traditional agriculture land

3

Maximize tree plantation to combat global warming

4

Support rights over minor forest produces and agriculture products

5

Combat hunger and malnutrition through traditional practices

6

Value addition for true value of products

7

Self-sustainable institutional structure with women leadership

Healing the Earth

Regenerative Farming

Going beyond sustainability — actively restoring degraded land, rebuilding soil organic matter, and reversing climate change through agricultural practices.

Minimize Soil Disturbance

Reduce tillage to preserve soil structure and microbial life

Keep Soil Covered

Use mulching and cover crops to protect soil from erosion and heat

Diversify Crops

Crop rotation and intercropping to enrich soil nutrients naturally

Keep Living Roots

Maintain continuous root systems to feed soil organisms year-round

Integrate Livestock

Animal integration for natural fertilization and ecosystem balance

Agroforestry

Combine trees with crops for microclimate regulation and carbon sequestration

“The nation that destroys its soil destroys itself.”

— Franklin D. Roosevelt

The Challenge

Climate Change

What is Causing Climate Change?

1Burning fuels like coal, oil, and gas
2Cutting down trees and destroying forests
3Excessive use of plastic and e-waste
4Dumping industrial waste into rivers, lakes, and seas
5Excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides
6Wasting food and water

Impact on Life & Ecosystem

1Air pollution and respiratory diseases on the rise
2Deforestation increases CO₂, decreases oxygen
3E-waste and plastic pollute soil for years
4Aquatic ecosystems destroyed by industrial waste
5Chemical fertilizers make soil unproductive
6Biodiversity loss and species disappearance
The Urgency

Why Save Land?

All living creatures in the world are dependent on land. India is an agricultural country and a large section is dependent on agriculture.

Drinking water is polluted due to soil pollution

Fertile land for agriculture is damaged

Natural calamities like floods, droughts, heavy rains

Species of animals and birds have disappeared

Biodiversity has begun to reverse

Air, food, and waterborne diseases are increasing

“Earth security, everyone's responsibility.”
